Job Description :

 

Business Need / Purpose of Role:

Reporting to the Director of Comminution Technology Group (CTG), the Senior Mechanical Engineer (represents Weir Minerals Division Technology Group as the technical subject matter expert for the research and development, design & augmentation of the mechanical & hydraulic systems for comminution products to achieve the agreed requirements, strategic and business objectives, in accordance with company policies and procedures.

 

Compliance with all defined Roles, Responsibilities and Accountabilities (RRAs) as documented by the Comminution Technology Group for the assigned position(s).

 

 

Objectives & Measurement

Key Responsibilities and Specific Accountabilities:

Compliance with all defined Roles, Responsibilities and Accountabilities (RRAs) as documented by the Comminution Technology Group for the assigned position.
Complete tasks assigned by supervisor and / or project lead engineer on time.
Responsible for planning their own work schedule to meet internal and external customer requirements.
Provide technical presentations, guidance and support to internal and external customers on analysis of complex application data, problem resolutions and recommendations.
Build and maintain effective relationships with key internal and external decision makers (key customers and representatives, learning institutions, key sub-suppliers, professional organizations, community groups) to ensure their ongoing support for Weir Minerals Division business objectives.
Participate on cross-functional teams to ensure the continuous, ongoing improvement of processes, methods, productivity and quality, while reducing costs.
Liaise with other departments to ensure services comply with customer specifications and expectations.  Provide direction to support teams as needed.
Research new engineering practices and analyze, recommend, and implement.
Travel to job sites of comminution products installation or operation and monitor first hand new product performance against target. Resolve technical issues; make improvements to satisfy customer expectations.
Complete special projects as assigned.
Implement procedures and systems that will ensure protection for Weir Minerals’ intellectual property and deter replications.
Promote and maintain a flexible, cooperative, team oriented, and customer focused attitude within and between departments.
Maintain technical competency and remain current in technology.
Keep manager and co-workers aware of pertinent issues and information warranting their knowledge, action and/or resolution.
Comply with all departmental and company policies, procedures, and programs.
Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations.  Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.
Responsible for Environmental Health and Safety management and policy commitments as prescribed for this role in Weir’s Duty of Care.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field and 8 to 10 years relevant work experience required in mechanical machine design in the areas of: mining, oil & gas, construction or comminution equipment or heavy industry is required.

 

High level of competency to include but not limited to, the use of the following engineering tools: SolidWorks, NX, AutoCAD, Siemens GPDM/Teamcenter, ANSYS, FeeMap, Mathcad, MATLAB.

Independent project execution experience is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory.  Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.

 

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Requires a valid driver’s license.  Professional Engineering license is encouraged.

 

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES
Familiarity with good manufacturing and assembly processes for Comminution & Construction Equipment is required. Must have good common-sense based mechanical aptitude, with documented hands on experience throughout their working career.

Must be able to influence across multiple functions in the organizations, and capable comprehensive supervision of others.  Must have expert understanding of general engineering principles.  Ability to create and supervise 2D and 3D component and assembly drawings and models through NX and or SolidWorks.  Expert practitioner of limits, fits, tolerances, and computer aided engineering. Practitioner of project management principles

 

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND WORK AIDS
Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard business machines, such as computer and job related software (Microsoft Office & Lotus Notes), NX, Siemens GPDM/Teamcenter, Visio, scientific calculator, telephone, fax photocopier, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, general office environment, and travel situations.  Moderate to loud noise.

 

When in the field, the individual will be subject to mineral processing facilities which can have sudden temperature changes, exposure to noise and fumes, exposure to dust and slurries that are being processed at the facility.
