Job Description
A Mechanical Development Engineer (MDE) is responsible for the design and release of components that are used in conjunction with each other within an assembly to meet the overall performance requirements of a product. The MDE works within the PowerDrive Systems organization in collaboration with Program Lead Engineers as well as CAE Engineers. The MDE must be capable of completing work requests from the Program Lead Engineer(s) to meet the defined program performance requirements and timing. The engineer must also request design and analysis work from the team members while working simultaneously with Manufacturing, Purchasing, Component Engineering and suppliers to achieve component release. In addition to component design and development, the MDE is responsible for generating the 2D and 3D CAD data of these designs. The MDE works under minimal supervision while developing designs, and stack-ups of individual parts or assemblies. The individual checks detail drawings and layouts. This includes producing detail drafting and other drafting related tasks as required.
Key responsibilities
Strong understanding of Electric Driveline and/or Traditional (ICE) Driveline systems and components
Understanding and implementation for BorgWarner PDP (Product Development Process) and EDF (Engineering Development Framework)
Understanding and interpretation of component and/or sub-system design requirements provided by program leads
Performing engineering analysis and calculations on components and/or sub-systems
Issuing CAE requests and provide direction as needed for analysis of components and/or sub-systems.
Creating and maintaining component and/or sub-system DFMEAs and use them to define Special Characteristics
Creating ADVP&R to validate components and write lab work orders to direct technicians to conduct testing on components
Creating technical design data including 2D prints and 3D models using NX.
Thorough knowledge of component drawing requirements, including tolerances, GD&T, and their use in stack calculation. Performing stack calculations.
Conducting DRR (Design Release Review) and creating work products (drawings, specifications, etc.) per program timing
Being the point of contact for technical discussions with Program Manager, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Suppliers, and Supplier Development Engineers
Promoting component re-use through knowledge of the global component family
Reviewing / Approving internal and external change requests
Providing technical support for component issues arising in validation or warranty
Providing cost reduction ideas for their respective component families.
Conducting and documenting benchmarking and lessons learned reviews
What we are looking for
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or a related field
Minimum of 3 years of related engineering work experience is required
Experience in EV Driveline and/or ICE Driveline systems is required
Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining 2D/3D technical drawings/models using NX CAD Software
Demonstrated experience of component and/or subsystem design, development, validation, and release
Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining DFMEA
Preferred Requirements
Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field
Minimum of 5 years of related engineering work experience
Experience and/or training in Root Cause Analysis
Experience and/or training in APQP
Experience and/or training in DFM/DFA
Self-directed/self-motivated
Excellent drive for results with the ability to coordinate projects from start to completion
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Software/ Hardware and General Training
MS Office (Excel/Word/PowerPoint/Project)
